DJI Mavic Series Comparison – Updated July 2021

December 13, 2020 / Drones

Updated September 2021

The DJI Mavic series has taken the top position from the Phantom series for the most common drone in the world. With a range of always updating models, it is hard to stay on top of the latest models. The above image is as it stands in July 2021.

DJI is also changing how it names these drones to add to the confusion. While they all fall under the Mavic line of DJI drones, the company has just decided to call the new models just DJI and dropping the word Mavic out of the name. E.g DJI Air 2s and DJI Mini 2.

What is the difference?

To put it simply, the more you spend, the bigger the machine and the better the image quality and features. While there are a number of small intricacies between each model these are the basics.

The April 2021 release of the Mavic Air 2s has made it the best value for money as the latest release has essentially put it on par with the more expensive Mavic 2 Pro. If you are looking to purchase a model today SkyStock’s recommendation is the Mavic Air 2S.

What’s next?

With the Air and Mini series seeing updates in the last year, the next best guess is that we will see an update with a Mavic 3 Pro in 2021. With rumours of a mechanical shutter, lidar scanner and interchangeable lens, it will be interesting to see what DJI releases. Watch this space!

Don’t be fooled!

Some of the statistics don’t add up. How can the Air 2S shoot 48mp while the more expensive Mavic 2 Pro only shoot 20mp photos? Check out our post on the Quad Bayer Filter to find out more.

Anything else?

Yes, we can be a bit one sided with our love for DJI equipment. We have found DJI to continually produce the best products time after time. We are always excited about new manufacturers entering the industry and am very much looking forward to Sony’s drone in 2021. We are also hearing good things about the Autel Evo 2, however we are yet to get out hands onto one. Check out our interview with Autel CEO Randall Warnas for what’s happening with the worlds 2nd biggest manufacturer.
