The Mavic Air 2 specifications seem to indicate that it is the best smaller drone on the market by some margin. The 48mp photos significantly eclipse the 20mp photos of the Mavic 2 Pro and the Phantom 4 Pro, however, all is not what it seems. The Mavic Air 2 does this via the Quad Bayer Filer. The DJI website is not very specific on what this technology does and their FAQ says the following:
You can Google Quad Bayer Filter and get a technical explanation if that’s what you are looking for, however, as a basic summary the filter essentially creates 4 times the amount of pixels for each one-shot. This is how a 12mp (12 million pixels) camera can create 48mp (48 million pixels) photos easily.
Is there any significant quality gain with having the Quad Bayer filter? The consensus seems to say it is a very marginal gain if any. The main achievement is for marketing departments to be able to launch products with very impressive stats!
In saying that though the Mavic 2 Air is still an impressive machine. Be sure to check out our quick comparison between the Mavic Air 2 and Mavic Pro 2 if you are unsure what to buy.
